Question: I missed the December deadline to take the SAT tests. Should I still take them?

Answer: Yes, you should sign up to take the SAT tests as soon as possible. Though we would not be able to use your test scores in our evaluation of your application, there is a chance you could be admitted without them. If that case, we would still require that you take the tests by the time you graduate from high school, or you would risk cancellation of your provisional admission. Question: Can I defer my admission?

Answer: You may be able to defer (postpone) your admission and fall enrollment in certain situations.

The Deferred Enrollment program allows you to postpone your initial enrollment at the university for up to one year. The program allows you to pursue other activities that will help you clarify your educational goals (e.g., job opportunities, non-collegiate experience, time to resolve personal or medical problems). You cannot enroll in another college or university during this period.

To be eligible for deferred enrollment, you must return your affirmative Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) with the deposit by the deadline, and must satisfy all university admission and entrance requirements.

After submitting your SIR, you can browse our deferred enrollment FAQs and apply for deferred enrollment through MyAdmissions. You must also submit a $60 processing fee prior to the first day of instruction of the quarter to which you have been admitted.

Question: What is the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)? Do I need to take it?

Answer: You must take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) if you did not satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement in one of the ways listed on the following Web site: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/adminfo/freshman/advising/other/writing.html. If you did not satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement, the UC system will send you a letter in mid-May providing you with a test date and location to take the AWPE. If you are not able to take the AWPE on that date, you will have another opportunity to take the exam before fall quarter begins. Be aware that you may not be able to sign up for classes that require satisfaction of the Entry Level Writing Requirement as a prerequisite until you pass the AWPE. If you received a letter directing you to take the AWPE and you believe you satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement in one of the ways listed on the above Web site, you may disregard the letter. Be sure to check your MyAdmissions page to confirm that the appropriate test scores and/or college transcripts that you are using to satisfy the requirement have arrived in our office.

Question: How do I make additions or corrections to my application? How will I know when you have received my changes?

Answer: Before November 30, you may call the UC Undergraduate Application Processing Service at (800) 523-2048 to make changes to your application.

After November 30 and before your application is received by UC Davis, you will not be able to make changes or corrections to your application unless there is an error with your name, Social Security number or birth date. In those instances, please fax a copy of a legal document (driver’s license, passport, Social Security card) that displays the correct information to our office at (530) 752-3712. Be sure to include your ID number and a short explanation of what needs to be corrected. You will need to contact each campus to which you applied to submit corrected application information.

Once you receive confirmation from UC Davis that we have received your application, you should immediately set up a MyAdmissions account using your UC Davis Student ID (SID). Use MyAdmissions to check your application status, update your contact information, report any changes in your grades, provide explanations for grades below "C," submit other required information and verify that we have received any documents you submitted.

Question: Did you receive my application? How can I find out more about the status of my application?

Answer:
After you submit your application online, you will receive an e-mail confirmation from the UC Undergraduate Admissions Processing Service (usually within four-to-five weeks of submitting your application). If UC Davis is listed in this e-mail as a campus to which you applied, it means we received your application.

By January 20, fall applicants should also receive an e-mail from UC Davis Undergraduate Admissions confirming that our campus has received your application from the UC Undergraduate Admissions Processing Service. We will send all e-mail communications regarding your admission status to the address that you listed on your application. Please add ucdavis.edu to your e-mail address book today so our messages don't get caught in your junk filter, and check your e-mail regularly. If you do not receive a confirmation message from us by January 20, please contact us at (530) 752-2971.

As soon as you receive a confirmation from our office, please be sure to set up your MyAdmissions account at http://myadmissions.ucdavis.edu and check it regularly to monitor your application status.

Question: Which SAT or ACT scores will UC Davis use? Does it look bad if I take the exams more than once?

Answer: UC Davis will use the highest scores from your SAT/ACT exam sittings. For the SAT Reasoning Test, we use the highest reading, math and writing score from one sitting. For the SAT Subject Tests, we use the highest two test scores in two different subject areas from any sitting. We will not mix and match the highest pieces from different sittings. We do not consider whether you took the tests more than once. But we do require that you take the tests no later than the December prior to the fall admission period for which you are applying (December 2008 is the deadline to take exams and be considered for fall 2009 admission, for example). Question: Do I have to complete IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) to be admitted to UC Davis?

Answer: No, completion of IGETC is not required for admission to UC Davis. In fact, we do not recommend that you complete IGETC if you plan to enter a major with substantial lower-division requirements, such as those offered in the College of Biological Sciences. In this case, it’s more important to complete courses required for your major than to fulfill all of your general education requirements before transferring. IGETC works well for students planning for Bachelor of Arts majors with few units of lower-division preparation. Students choosing the IGETC pattern should complete it while at community college (with some exceptions). The Web sites assist.org and registrar.ucdavis.edu/UCDWebCatalog provide aditional details.

Question: How do I know if my classes transfer?

Answer: Our Admissions office cannot evaluate transcripts to determine your transferable courses until you apply to UC Davis. If you attend a California community college, you can use the assist.org Web site to determine which of your classes transfer to UC Davis. If you attend a school other than a California community college, you can get a good idea of your transferable courses by comparing your course descriptions with the course descriptions of similar classes here at UC Davis (or at any UC). If the course descriptions match up, the courses will probably transfer. You can find UC Davis' course descriptions in our General Catalog: registrar.ucdavis.edu/UCDWebCatalog.

Question: If I have taken college coursework during high school, am I considered a freshman or transfer applicant?

Answer: You are considered a freshman applicant if you completed your college coursework while you were still in high school. If you are admitted, you will submit your high school and college transcripts. You will receive units for any transferable coursework, but will retain freshman status until the spring quarter of your first year when you units have been completely processed.  Transferable college courses taken while in high school are considered "honors" courses in the calculation of your gpa.  You may receive up to 8 additional points in the calculation of your gpa for honors courses taken in the last three years of high school (in which you received grades of C or better).

Question: What are the freshman admission requirements?

Answer: Applicants must be eligible for UC admission, and then they must meet the selection requirements for the individual UC campus they wish to attend. The main path to become eligible for UC admission is to become eligible in the "Statewide Context," which means you must satisfy certain subject, scholarship and examination requirements:

  • The subject requirement is the course subjects you need to take ("a-g")
  • The scholarship requirement is the required combination of GPA in "a-g" courses and college admission test scores
  • The exmination requirement is the ACT Assessment plus Writing OR the SAT Reasoning Test, AND two SAT Subject Tests in two different subject area
You can learn more about our freshman admission requirements on our website at admissions.ucdavis.edu/admissions/fr_adm_reqt.cfm. Question: Can I transfer to UC Davis from another UC campus? Are my chances of admission to UC Davis higher if I'm already attending another UC campus?

Answer: Yes, students can transfer to UC Davis from other UC campuses. However, the highest priority for transfer admission is given to junior-level California community college applicants with 60 semester (90 quarter) units. Next priority is given to junior-level applicants from other UC campuses and other four-year institutions, in and out of California. Finally, if space is available, lower-division (sophomore-level) transfer applicants with superior grades may be admitted, but only into the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Question: I graduated high school a while ago, and have taken some college courses since then. Should I apply to UC Davis as a freshman?

Answer: If you have taken any coursework at a community college following high school graduation, you would be considered a transfer applicant.

To transfer to UC Davis you will need to have completed a minimum of 90 quarter/60 semester units of transferable coursework before enrollment.  Please note that completing required coursework in the summer immediately before fall admission is not allowed. You will also need to complete UC transfer eligibility courses and prerequisite courses required by your major. Visit http://admissions.ucdavis.edu/admissions/tr_adm_reqt.cfm for more information about these requirements and check http://assist.org website to determine exactly what courses you should take at the community college to transfer to UC Davis.

We give highest priority in admissions to students transferring from California community colleges. We encourage you to work with your community college counselor as soon as possible to plan your course of study for transfer to UC Davis. If you enroll in a California community college participating in our Transfer Opportunity Program (TOP), a UC Davis admissions adviser visits your campus regularly and is available to help you plan your transfer. We also offer a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) at all California community colleges. Please visit http://admissions.ucdavis.edu/admissions/tr_pros_stdt.cfm to learn more about these opportunities and other information to help you transfer to UC Davis.

Question: Did you receive my AP/ACT/SAT test scores and/or transcripts? When will they be reflected in MyAdmissions?

Answer: After you apply to UC Davis, you can check your MyAdmissions page to determine if UC Davis received your transcripts and/or test scores.

You can confirm that UC Davis has received your SAT, ACT, and/or AP scores by clicking on the "View Scores Received" link on your MyAdmissions page. Once we receive your official test scores from College Board, the scores will be displayed as "official" on your MyAdmissions page. Please note that only your highest sitting from the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT and your two highest Subject Test scores will show as received. If you do not see information you submitted reflected in MyAdmissions by January 20, please call our office at (530) 752-2971.

Once UC Davis has received your official, final transcripts, they will show as "received" on MyAdmissions. It can take a week or more for transcripts to display as "received,"; transcripts showing summer session coursework can take up to three months to be reflected, so please be patient. If it has been longer than this since the date your submitted your documents, please call our office at (530) 752-2971.
