Question: Can I defer my admission?

Answer: You may be able to defer (postpone) your admission and fall enrollment in certain situations.

The Deferred Enrollment program allows you to postpone your initial enrollment at the university for up to one year. The program allows you to pursue other activities that will help you clarify your educational goals (e.g., job opportunities, non-collegiate experience, time to resolve personal or medical problems). You cannot enroll in another college or university during this period.

To be eligible for deferred enrollment, you must return your affirmative Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) with the deposit by the deadline, and must satisfy all university admission and entrance requirements.

After submitting your SIR, you can browse our deferred enrollment FAQs and apply for deferred enrollment through MyAdmissions. You must also submit a $60 processing fee prior to the first day of instruction of the quarter to which you have been admitted.

Question: What is the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)? Do I need to take it?

Answer: You must take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) if you did not satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement in one of the ways listed on the following Web site: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/adminfo/freshman/advising/other/writing.html. If you did not satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement, the UC system will send you a letter in mid-May providing you with a test date and location to take the AWPE. If you are not able to take the AWPE on that date, you will have another opportunity to take the exam before fall quarter begins. Be aware that you may not be able to sign up for classes that require satisfaction of the Entry Level Writing Requirement as a prerequisite until you pass the AWPE. If you received a letter directing you to take the AWPE and you believe you satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement in one of the ways listed on the above Web site, you may disregard the letter. Be sure to check your MyAdmissions page to confirm that the appropriate test scores and/or college transcripts that you are using to satisfy the requirement have arrived in our office.

Question: My son/daughter was recently admitted to UC Davis. How do I find out what type of financial aid s/he received? It seems as though I should have access to this information since I'm paying for school.

Answer:

Your son/daughter can pick up his/her financial aid award notice on MyAwards through MyAdmissions.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) transfers all rights to student educational records from parents to student when the student reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the secondary level. Parents may access student records if the student is claimed as a dependent for Federal income tax purposes. If neither parent claims the student as a dependent, parents may have access only if the student is willing to release the information. Such a release must be made in writing to the Office of the University Registrar.

Question: I am having difficulty with my statement of legal residence, specifically during the questions concerning my parents. I have two mothers and no fathers, however instead of the question format stating options of [Guardian 1] and [Guardian 2], it states mother and father, so I was wondering how I should go on at answering the questions.

Answer: You can list one of your mothers under "Mother" and the other under "Father." The purpose of the form is to determine that you are the child of parents who are living in state -- putting one of your mothers under the "Father" section won't affect the processing of the form.

This form is prepared by the Office of the University Registrar, so if you wanted to recommend new language to be used in the form in the future, please send your comments to registrar@ucdavis.edu.

Question: I would like to attend Decision UC Davis, but registration is closed. Can I come anyway?

Answer:
We have to close registration due to fire regulations, but often have a number of students who register but don't end up attending. If you decide to come without preregistering, and space is available, you can register on site.

If you decide not to come, I hope you will consider attending Picnic Day, or annual campus open house. Picnic Day is open to the public and is a great opportunity to learn about many of our academic departments and student organizations. Question: I was recently admitted to UC Davis from another state and would like to attend, but cannot afford tuition. Does UC Davis participate in the Western Undergraduate exchange program offered by schools in the northwest? Are there scholarships available to help pay for out-of-state tuition?

Answer:
Unfortunately, UC campuses do not participate in the Western Undergraduate exchange program.

Most UC Davis scholarships (excluding our state-funded Regents Scholar scholarship) can be applied to out-of-state costs; these campus scholarships are typically about $1,000 and awards aren't announced until June. Scholarships from outside agencies can be applied to out-of-state costs without impacting your financial aid award. We recommend using the Non-UC Davis Scholarship Search Tools found on our Undergraduate Scholarships Web site to locate scholarships from outside agencies.

Please visit our Office of the University Registrar site to learn more about howyou can establish California residency.

Many of our students hold jobs, both on and off-campus, to enhance their academic experience and help pay for college. Student jobs are coordinated through our Student Employment Center.

If you have additional questions specific to scholarships, please contact our Undergraduate Scholarships Office at (530) 752-2804.
