Animal Science

Animal Science

Since the emergence of modern humanity, the relationships between people and animals have been an integral part of our society, economy and culture. Animals provide us with food, clothing, recreation and companionship. Animal science--the study of the biological function of domestic and captive animals and their utilization by people--focuses on modern, efficient and humane ways to make the best use and take the best care of the animals who share our lives. As an animal science major, you'll work with animals regularly as you prepare for a career or further study in such fields as veterinary medicine, agricultural production, business, research or teaching.

Real World

Animal science majors from UC Davis have entered careers as fisheries owners, agricultural and pharmaceutical sales staff, researchers, agricultural and natural resources consultants, lawyers, physicians, veterinarians and teachers.

Major Requirements

You will begin with courses designed to give you a broad foundation in biological and physiological sciences. In your more advanced courses, you will study animal behavior, biochemistry, genetics, nutrition, physiology and the integration of these sciences with animal health and productivity. You will choose a specialization in either a specific discipline (such as animal behavior or nutrition) or in the sciences as they relate to a specific class of animals (such as aquatic, companion or dairy animals).

A Student Perspective

The best thing about the animal science program is the hands-on learning. Our classes combine lectures with lab work and field trips. I've learned how to do everything from milking a cow to vasectomizing a mouse! Students also have the chance to focus on a specific group of animals of particular interest to them, such as pets, horses, livestock and dairy animals or birds.

A Faculty Perspective

One of the greatest strengths of the animal science program is our faculty. The professors genuinely care about teaching and the students; they also possess a wide diversity of research expertise which allows our students to explore many aspects of animal science. In one of my favorite classes to teach, Companion Animal Biology, I enjoy the opportunity to work with both majors and nonmajors, giving practical information that will ultimately improve our interactions with companion animals.
