Avian Sciences

Avian Sciences

Birds play an increasingly important part in human economy and society. Domesticated birds provide food, feathers and companionship; wild birds are significant players in nearly every terrestrial ecosystem. Avian science majors consider birds as both economically and environmentally important organisms. Bird biology, behavior, productivity and management are all subjects avian science majors study in detail. Graduates of UC Davis' avian science program may work with food birds such as chickens; with birds kept as companions or in aviaries; with game bird populations or with wild birds in any part of the world.

Real World

Avian sciences majors from UC Davis are in great demand in the agricultural industry, and many graduates choose to go directly into the job market. Others go on to further study in agricultural or biological sciences. Avian biology agencies and educational institutions are among other top employers of avian sciences graduates.

Major Requirements

The avian sciences program blends elements of both biological and agricultural sciences; your coursework will reflect this combination as you begin with a strong foundation in these important areas. At the upper division, you will have the chance to concentrate on birds in the areas of most interest to you: agricultural productivity, captive and companion bird health or the functions of birds in wild ecosystems. Within these areas, you will take courses on bird nutrition, genetics, management and reproduction. The program offers broad flexibility, allowing you to work closely with faculty and researchers to customize your major.

A Student Perspective

Whether you're interested in raptors, parrots, poultry or any other kind of bird, this is an excellent program! The major allows students to get a good foundation in many different areas through research programs, internships and courses. I'm considering a career in wildlife journalism, and I've found all of my avian sciences classes have provided interesting, informative, exciting preparation for my career.

A Faculty Perspective

There is a strong collegial relationship between both faculty and students in the program. Our students are genuinely interested in avians, and the program provides a great deal of practical knowledge and experience. The combination of preparatory material and avian biology prepares students to work in a great variety of areas.
