Environmental Policy Analysis & Planning

Environmental Policy Analysis & Planning

How can governments and private agencies foster a healthy balance between economic and community development and environmental preservation and restoration? Crafting thoughtful policies to meet these seemingly conflicting goals is the focus of the major in environmental policy analysis and planning. Students in this major receive substantial training in areas of environmental law and community planning. Issues of resource quality, pollution, energy use and recreational policy are all addressed by EPAP majors.

Real World

UC Davis environmental policy analysis and planning graduates are currently working in all levels of government and public agencies concerned with air and water quality management, environmental planning and consulting firms. This is also an excellent major for students planning to enter law school.

Major Requirements

The courses in this major focus on the relationship between humans and the environment. Interdisciplinary coursework includes economics, agricultural economics, political science and sociology. Internships are highly encouraged in this major, as real-world research work is a focus of the program. Students have the option of taking one of seven specializations, including city and regional planning, water quality planning, environmental science, air pollution control policy, energy policy, advanced policy analysis and recreational policy.

A Student Perspective

As a student in the Environmental Policy and Planning program, I've gotten a wonderfully well-rounded university education thanks primarily to the requirements of my major. I think this is a quality that makes EPAP students particularly well prepared not only as environmental problem solvers, but also as educated citizens. In part because of the relevance of my major to the goals of the agency, I've been able to work for the U.S. Forest Service during the past two summers and I'm planning to return to the Eldorado National Forest this summer.

A Faculty Perspective

This program provides particularly strong training in public policy analysis and a solid grounding in environmental science. Our students are well prepared for work in planner/policy analyst positions in government agencies and consulting firms as well as for advanced study in policy, planning, law and related areas.
