A major in music teaches you to explore and understand the history, theory and performance of music. Your professors and lecturers are active researchers and performing musicians; many have had works performed, published and recorded around the globe. Artists-in-Residence spend one quarter each year on campus, giving concerts and working closely with undergraduates. You'll also have the chance to perform with our symphony orchestra, band, chorus, gospel choir or smaller ensembles. Department facilities include an extensive collection of musical instruments dating as far back as the Renaissance, an electronic music studio and an excellent music library.
Real World
UC Davis music majors have become successful musical performers, conductors and teachers; others have found careers in other aspects of the music business such as recording or management. One conducts choirs at Pomona College, one teaches composition at Princeton, and two have sung with the New York City Opera. Still others have blended the analytical and communication skills learned in their music classes with other talents, going on to careers in medicine, law, business, publishing and advertising.
Major Requirements
Studies in the music program at UC Davis provide an excellent grounding in music theory, history, composition and performance. Approximately one-half of your college coursework will be in music, including three years of music theory, two years of music history and participation in performing groups. At the upper division level, you will choose a focus in a special interest area such as composition, history, or performance.

A Student Perspective
One of the exciting benefits of being a music student at UC Davis is the
opportunity to perform on the same stage as world-renowned artists such as
Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Wynton Marsalis. We're really lucky to have
the Mondavi Center!
Within the department, you really get to know everyone. It's easy for
students to establish relationships with their professors, which is a
rewarding, yet rare, opportunity in a university of this size. Knowing your
professors can really enrich the quality of your learning experience.
