Natural Sciences

The need for well-trained science teachers is growing in California and many other states. The major in natural sciences is designed specifically to help students get the broad-based training they need to enter the education field. But majors will find their options expanded, not limited by this program: knowledge of many different areas of science can lead to a rewarding career in many different professions. Drawing from the latest research in biology, geology, chemistry and physics, students will learn to appreciate the way these sciences integrate to help explain phenomena of the natural world.

Real World

Students majoring in natural sciences are well prepared to enter teacher credentialing programs for science teaching at the middle school or high school level. The strong general science background provided by this program also provides strong preparation for careers in other science-related fields, such as journalism, law, business or environmental work.

Major Requirements

During your first two years of study, you will study fundamental concepts in biology, chemistry, earth sciences, physics and mathematics. At the upper-division level, you will choose two of the natural sciences (chemistry, earth science, life science or physics) as areas of specialization.

A Student Perspective

Natural Sciences is a great major for someone who likes science in general but would rather study a variety of disciplines than be limited to just one area. I think this major gives great exposure in the areas of science in which you are most interested. The major is affiliated with the Department of Geology, which I think has some of the best professors, students and staff at UC Davis! I'm planning to enter a teacher credential program after earning my degree here, and I know the range of courses offered will help me do well in my future career as a middle school or high school science teacher.

A Faculty Perspective

The Natural Sciences major features unusually broad training in the basic sciences including biology, chemistry, earth science and physics. The program provides maximum flexibility for those who wish to obtain a broad scientific perspective as well as some depth in two of the sciences. The program will meet the needs of prospective science teachers but also has exciting opportunities for others who may wish to pursue careers in environmental science, medicine, environmental law or journalism.
