What is the proper role of government in a democratic society? What rights should be extended to citizens, and how should those rights be protected? Political scientists study the complex, intertwined forms of government and their effects on citizens, businesses and institutions. As a political science major at UC Davis, you'll enjoy the unique advantage of having California's state capital just a few minutes' drive away. Internships and study programs both in Sacramento and at the UC Davis Washington Center give you the chance to enrich your studies with first-hand experience in government agencies and other political organizations.
Real World
Political science majors develop research, analytic and communication skills relevant to many professional fields. These skills provide the first step toward careers in teaching, law, management, government, urban planning, journalism, politics, administration or for graduate studies in various fields.
Major Requirements
You will begin your studies with fundamental courses in contemporary political science and the historical foundations of modern politics. At the upper-division level, you will study a broad range of topics in political theory, American government and institutions, public law, and international relations and comparative political systems.

A Student Perspective
Being a political science major at UC Davis has taught me to think differently. Its demands and rigors have allowed me to incorporate knowledge from my previous political science, history and philosophy courses. I have the time, the informed colleagues and the opportunity needed to contemplate political ideas and life, and the major provides the perfect, intense forum to spark political discussions. The course offerings are diverse and abundant, and there are unparalleled opportunities for internships in all levels of local and state government.

A Faculty Perspective
The political science department combines the resources of a major research university with a strong focus on undergraduate education and opportunities. We offer limited class sizes, seminars for upper-division majors where students interact closely with faculty, and honors opportunities for outstanding students. I hope the focus of my own research and teaching-early modern political thought-helps students grow to appreciate some truly complex and challenging creations of the human mind.
