All the world’s a stage! At UC Davis, our focus on hands-on student experience means you’ll have all the chances you crave to sing, dance, act or play an instrument in front of an audience. If you’re more the behind-the-scenes type, you can put your talents to good use helping to design, choreograph or direct one of our student productions.
Birdstrike Theatre
Members of this long-form improvisation and sketch comedy troupe have performed at the collegiate improv festival, Fracas! in Los Angeles. In addition to performing, they collaborated with other improv groups, attended workshops and participated in panel discussions. Meets for one improv session and one writing session weekly. Danzantes del Alma
Danzantes performs traditional style Mexican folklorico dance, and has been a campus presence since 1977. The non-competitive, community-based troupe presents a diverse repertoire from a variety of regions throughout Mexico. The 30-member troupe operates under the guidance of an artistic director and a 15-member student board. Danzantes performs for over 9,000 people at campus and community events throughout the year. One of their highest priorities is educational outreach to underprivileged children in area schools, inspiring students by serving as role models and promoting self-esteem through ethnic pride. The Department of Theatre and Dance
The Department of Theatre and Dance brings a renowned British dramatist to campus each year as part of the Granada Artist-in-Residence Program. You can work alongside one of contemporary theater’s shining stars as you hone your own craft.
MK Modern Dance
This hip-hop dance team incorporates funk, jazz and break dancing into its repertoire. MK Modern grew out of the Mga Kapatid Pilipino culture night and has evolved into a constantly-evolving dance troupe, earning first place in the 2006 Rhythm of the Night campus dance competition. Mobility
This multi-style dance group explores a variety of dance styles, including break dancing, contemporary dance, funk, hip-hop, pop 'n' lock and salsa The group meets twice weekly. For more information, visit myspace.com/mobilityucd.
Na Keiki O' Hawai'i
This traditional troupe performs Tahitian ad Maori style dance, including Hula, with haka chanting. No auditions are necessary, and the group meets about three times per week. For more information, visit their facebook group.
Studio 301
Studio 301 is a community of students who are passionate about all forms of theatre, and accepts all UC Davis students. In addition to full-scale productions, Studio 301 also produces a weekly showcase of local talent called Fridays@4, and Three Penny Productions, an offering of small-scale, low budget shows including student works. The group meets five- to six-nights per week and has performed shows such as Cabaret, Into the Woods, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) and The Last Five Years. UC Davis Dance Team
This branch of the UC Davis Spirit Squad performs jazz/hip-hop performances. Every August, the team attends Universal Dance Association (UDA) dance camp to learn new routines. The Undergraduate Theater Festival
Our Undergraduate Theater Festival allows students to take the spotlight as playwrights, directors, actors and crew. Student-produced films are also featured in this annual event.
Other Performance Opportunities
With 11 university-sponsored music performance groups active on campus, UC Davis gives student musicians a broad range of opportunities to participate. From the student-run Cal Aggie Marching Band to the nationally renowned UC Davis Gospel Choir, all genres of music are represented and celebrated.
