Requirements in the College of Engineering

Engineering students

General Preparation for Engineering Majors

All majors in the College of Engineering are selective and require preparatory coursework for admission. You may use ASSIST to search for courses at your California community college that are comparable to UC Davis courses. It is strongly recommended that students complete UC transfer requirements in the areas of English composition (2 courses) and mathematics (1 course) by the end of the fall term one year prior to enrollment in order to receive priority consideration. At least 60 semester (90 quarter) transferable units and any required major preparatory courses that are offered at your current college must be completed by the close of spring term for fall enrollment at UC Davis. If required courses are not offered at your college, you must complete them after enrolling at UC Davis.

You must earn an overall transfer GPA of 3.10 or higher to be a competitive candidate for admission to any engineering major. An overall transfer GPA of 3.30 or higher is required to qualify for a fall 2015 Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG). Courses must be taken for a letter grade, with no grade less than C.

Preparation for Specific Majors

In addition to the general requirements outlined above, each engineering major requires a specific set of preparatory courses.

Applicants must complete all lower-division courses required for their specific engineering major as listed on the ASSIST website under courses "Required for Admission." Applicants to fall 2015 should view ASSIST articulation agreements by major effective during the 2013-14 academic year with the following exceptions:

  • The Electrical Engineering major and Computer Engineering major no longer include a requirement for completion of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ENG E&C) 70 or Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 50.
  • The Materials Science and Engineering major no longer includes a requirement for completion of Engineering (ENGIN) 35. Though not required, completion of Engineering 35 is recommended.

Required coursework varies by major; however, the following UC Davis courses are common to all engineering majors:

  • Mathematics 21A/B/C/D
  • Mathematics 22A/B
  • Physics 9A/B/C
  • Chemistry 2A
  • English 3 or University Writing Program (UWP) 1*

*Only UWP 1 can be used to satisfy the lower-division composition requirement for Biological Systems Engineering students.

To qualify for a fall 2015 TAG, complete UC transfer requirements in the areas of English composition (2 courses) and mathematics (1 course) by the end of fall term 2014 and complete all required units and major preparatory courses by the end of spring term prior to fall enrollment. You must also meet or exceed the minimum overall GPA of 3.30 from the time your TAG is submitted up to the time of enrollment.

Otherwise, we give the highest priority for admission to California community college transfers who have completed all of the required lower-division engineering coursework offered at the community college they attended. Lower admission priority is given to community college applicants who are missing one or two of the required lower-division courses. Community college applicants will be denied admission if they are missing three or more of the required lower-division courses. Next priority is given to junior level transfers from other UC campuses and other four-year institutions in and out of state who meet the lower-division engineering selection requirements.

UC Davis currently requires preparatory coursework for the following engineering majors:

Applicants for fall 2016 and later (including TAG applicants) in the Biochemical Engineering major, Chemical Engineering major and Materials Science and Engineering major must complete Engineering (ENGIN) 6 or Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 30 or Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (ENG CMS) 6.

Applicants for fall 2017 and later (including TAG applicants) in all engineering majors must complete all lower-division major requirements with a cumulative GPA of 3.10 or higher. Before submitting a TAG or UC application, students must have already achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.10 or higher in required lower-division major coursework completed. For example, if three courses within the lower-division requirements have been completed when the TAG or UC application is submitted, the cumulative GPA for these three courses must be 3.10 or higher.  The overall GPA for UC-transferable coursework will remain 3.30 or higher.

  • **Only Communication 1 can be used to satisfy the communications requirement for Computer Science and Engineering. No credit will be allowed for Communication 3.
