California Residents
To qualify for admission, you must meet one of our three sets of eligibility requirements: Eligibility in the Statewide Context, Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) or Eligibility by Examination Alone.
- Eligibility in the Statewide Context: Eligibility in the Statewide Context is the pathway by which most students attain UC eligibility. This context compares the achievements of students graduating from California public and private high schools; in this context, you will compete with a large and diverse group of students from throughout the state. To be eligible in the statewide context, you must satisfy the subject requirement, scholarship requirement and examination requirement.
- Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC): The Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) pathway guarantees UC eligibility to the top four percent of students at each participating California high school. The ELC designation remains one of the key criteria considered by selective campuses when the number of applicants exceeds the spaces available.
To be considered for ELC, you must complete 11 specific units for the subject requirement by the end of your junior year. With the assistance of each participating high school, the university will identify the top four percent of students on the basis of GPA in the required coursework.
The 11 units include: 1 unit of history/social science, 3 units of English, 2 units of mathematics, 1 unit of laboratory science, 1 unit of language other than English and 3 units of college preparatory electives (see descriptions).
If you are designated UC-eligible through ELC, the university will notify you of your status at the beginning of your senior year. You must submit the UC application during the November filing period and complete remaining eligibility requirements (including the subject and examination requirements) to enroll.
More information about ELC is available from UC Office of the President.
- Eligibility by Examination Alone: If you do not meet the requirements for Eligibility in the Statewide Context or Eligibility in the Local Context, you may be able to qualify for UC eligibility by examination alone.
To qualify, you must satisfy the same examination requirement as students who are eligible in the statewide context, and achieve a minimum UC Score total, as calculated by the Eligibility Index, of at least 410.
In addition, students must achieve a minimum UC Score of 63 on each component of the ACT or SAT Reasoning Test and on each SAT Subject Test. An applicant who is currently attending high school may qualify for admission to the university by examination alone without completing his or her high school program.
You cannot qualify for admission by examination alone if you have completed 12 or more units of transferable coursework at another college or university following high school graduation or if you have taken transferable college courses in any subject covered by the SAT Subject Tests.
Nonresidents of California
There are two paths to UC eligibility for non-California residents at the freshman level. The first is Eligibility in the Statewide Context, and the second is Eligibility by Examination Alone:
- Eligibility in the Statewide Context: Eligibility in the Statewide Context is the pathway by which most students attain UC eligibility. This context compares the achievements of students graduating from California public and private high schools; in this context, you will compete with a large and diverse group of students from throughout the state. To be eligible in the statewide context, you must satisfy the subject requirement, examination requirement and the following non-resident scholarship requirement:
Your grade point average in the “a-g” subjects must be 3.4 or higher. Regardless of your grade point average, your combined test scores must meet or exceed the minimum listed for your GPA on the Eligibility Index.
- Eligibility by Examination: To qualify for admission by examination alone, you must satisfy the same examination requirements as students who are eligible in the statewide context. You must achieve a test score total, as calculated by the Eligibility Index, of at least 425.
