Academic History

  • Read and follow the instructions for reporting your educational history.
  • Make sure to list "GCE O Levels," "GCSE," "IGCSE," "HKCEE" or "SPM," the examination authority and the date received in the "Diploma/Degree/Certificate and Date" column next to the appropriate school (e.g., GCE O Levels, Edexel, 06/01).
  • Then do the same for your "GCE A Levels," "HKALE" or "STPM" next to your high school of graduation.

Freshman Self-Reported Academic Record

  • Read and follow the instructions for reporting your academic records. Do not consider any O Level, GCSE, IGCSE, HKCEE, SPM, GCE A Level, HKALE, STPM or AS Level subjects “honors level” on the application. We are already very familiar with these curricula and will evaluate them accordingly.
  • In the 10th grade column list O Level, GCSE, IGCSE, HKCEE or SPM subjects in the appropriate subject areas. Next to each subject, enter the title of your certificate. For example, you may enter, “Math HKCEE.” Enter the word “none” in the “first semester grade” column and enter the O Level score in the “second semester grade” column.
  • In the 11th grade column, indicate the courses in progress for GCE A Levels, HKALE or STPM and AS Levels in the appropriate subject areas. Next to each subject enter the title of your certificate. If you are taking both A and AS levels please distinguish between them. For example, you may enter “Math GCE AS Level.” If you already know any AS Level grades, then enter them in the “second semester grade” column. Enter the word “none” in the “first semester grade” column.
  • In the 12th grade column, you may list any predicted grades as part of each subject title. Please clearly enter “predicted” next to each subject. For example, you may write “Math GCE A/L predicted A”.
  • If you have already completed your GCE A Levels, HKALE, or STPM list your final grades in the 12th grade column. Make sure to tell us what you have been doing since you graduated.
    • If you have begun to attend another educational institution or plan to do so at any point before the term you are applying for, you must list it in your educational history. Remember that once you enroll in a university or post-secondary college during the academic year after completing your A Levels, HKALE or STPM, you are considered a transfer student. The eligibility requirements for transfer students are different.
    • If you have not begun to attend an educational institution and do not plan to before the term you are applying for, please clarify your activities in the Gap in Education section.

Students with Both Foreign and U.S. Education

If you only completed a portion of your secondary schooling in one of these countries, but then moved to the U.S., please report both your foreign and U.S. coursework. It is very important that we have a clear understanding of your performance in both educational systems. You are also welcome to explain your situation in a portion of your personal statement. If your change in educational systems caused you to skip or repeat a year of education, please read the instructions in Special Situations.

If you left your country before completing your O Level, GCSE, IGCSE, HKCEE or SPM please follow these instructions.

  • Report your schools attended in the Academic History section. Indicate that you left your country before receiving your O Level, GCSE, IGCSE, HKCEE or SPM.
  • Report your school issued subjects and grades in the proper columns. Do not enter "O Level," "GCSE," "IGCSE," "HKCEE" or "SPM" next to any of the subjects. For example, simply enter "Math."
  • Please report your school's internal grading system in your Personal Statement. We will need to know the full scale of grades from highest to failing. We will also need you to indicate which grade is the lowest passing grade.
  • Continue with reporting the classes you are taking in the U.S.

If you completed O Level, GCSE, IGCSE, HKCEE or SPM and then left your country in the middle of your GCE A Levels, HKALE, or STPM preparation, please follow these instructions.

  • Report your schools attended in the Academic History section. Indicate that you completed your O Level, GCSE, IGCSE, HKCEE or SPM. Also indicate that you DID NOT complete your GCE A Levels, HKALE, or STPM. In order to be eligible for freshman admission you must show that you will be graduating with a U.S. high school diploma or comparable credential in lieu of GCE A Levels, HKALE, or STPM.
  • Report your O Level, GCSE, IGCSE, HKCEE or SPM subjects and grades according to the guidelines above.
  • Report your school issued subjects and grades for the completed portion of your GCE A Levels, HKALE, or STPM program.
  • Please report your school’s internal grading system in your Personal Statement. We will need to know the full scale of grades from highest to failing. We will also need you to indicate which grade is the lowest passing grade.
  • Continue with reporting the classes you are taking in the U.S.
