Academic History

  • Read and follow the instructions for reporting your educational history.
  • Make sure to list your School Certificate (SC) or NCEA Level 1, Sixth Form Certificate (SFC) or NCEA Level 2, Higher School Certificate (HSC) and Bursary Examination or NCEA Level 3 (if applicable) and the dates received in the column “Diploma/Degree/Certificate and Date” next to the appropriate school.

Freshman Self-Reported Academic Record

  • Read and follow the instructions for reporting your academic records. Do not consider any regular secondary school subjects “honors level” on the application. We are already very familiar with secondary education in New Zealand.
  • In the 9th grade column, list your Form 4 subjects and grades. We understand that you do not receive any official qualification after the completion of Form 4 and that internal school grading practices vary at this level. Please include a brief description of your school’s internal grading system in your Personal Statement. We will need to know the full scale of grades from highest to failing. We will also need you to indicate which grade is the lowest passing grade.
  • In the 10th year column, list your School Certificate (SC) or NCEA Level 1 subjects and scores. Please write the word “none” in the “first semester grade” column and list the scores in the “second semester grade” column. Enter “SC” or “NCEA Level 1” next to each subject. For example, you may enter “Math – NCEA Level 1.”
  • In the 11th grade column, list your Sixth Form Certificate (SFC) or NCEA Level 2 subjects and scores. Again, write the word “none” in the “first semester grade” column and list your scores in the “second semester grade” column. Also enter “SFC” or “NCEA Level 2” next to each subject.
  • In the 12th grade list your subjects in progress for your Higher School Certificate (HSC) or NCEA Level 3 or Bursary. Enter “HSC” or “NCEA Level 3” or “Bursary” next to each subject.
  • If you have already completed your Higher School Certificate (HSC) or NCEA Level 3 or Bursary, list your final scores in the 12th grade column. Tell us if you have been awarded an “A” or “B” Bursary and list the Bursary subjects. Make sure to tell us what you have been doing since you graduated.
    • If you have begun to attend another educational institution or plan to do so at any point before the term you are applying for, you must list it in your educational history. Remember that once you enroll in a university or post-secondary college during the academic year after completing your Higher School Certificate (HSC) or NCEA Level 3 or Bursary, you are considered a transfer student. The eligibility requirements for transfer students are different.
    • If you have not begun to attend a college or university and do not plan to do so before the term you are applying for, please clarify your activities in the Gap in Education section.

Students with Both Foreign and U.S. Education

If you only attended a portion of your secondary schooling in New Zealand, but then moved to the U.S., please report both your foreign and U.S. coursework. It is very important that we have a clear understanding of your performance in both educational systems. You are also welcome to explain your situation in a portion of your Personal Statement. If your change in educational systems caused you to skip or repeat a year of education, please read the instructions in Special Situations.

In order to be eligible for freshman admission, you must show that you will be graduating with a U.S. high school diploma or comparable credential in lieu of the Higher School Certificate, NCEA Level 3 or Bursary.
