When you study abroad, you will probably receive academic credit in one of three ways listed below. It is very important that you report your study abroad coursework accurately in your application. If you are uncertain about the format of your academic records, you may want to show the following guidelines to your study abroad program and ask them how your credit will be granted.

  1. If you will receive a transcript or certificate directly from a foreign institution, you must report your coursework exactly as it will appear on the official academic record issued by the foreign institution.
    • If you will have completed a structured certificate program for foreign students, please report your certificate title and the date received in the field “Diploma/Degree/Certificate” and the date completed in the Academic History section.
    • If you used a study abroad provider to get enrolled in the foreign institution, please list the title of the provider next to the school you attended in the Academic History section. For example: “University of Salamanca, ISA.”
    • List your subjects and grades as they appear on your foreign transcript in the Transfer Self-Reported Academic Record. If your transcript indicates a “level” for language courses, make sure to write the level next to each subject.
  2. If you will receive a transcript issued directly by a non-institution, consortium or unaccredited study abroad program, you must also list your courses exactly as they are listed on the transcript. You should be aware that we generally do not recognize transfer credit from these entities. However, we will make this determination when we evaluate your application.
    • List the title of the program in the Academic History section.
    • List your subjects and grades as they appear on your transcript in the Transfer Self-Reported Academic Record. If your transcript indicates a level for language courses, make sure to write the level next to each subject.
  3. If you will receive credit through an accredited U.S. university, it is very important for us to know exactly how your credit will be listed on the transcript. Please read the guidelines below. If you do not know exactly how the credit will be listed, you will need to contact your study abroad program.

If the transcript will itemize exactly which courses you completed, please read these guidelines:
    • Each course must have a specific title corresponding to a course description in the academic catalog of the U.S. institution issuing the transcript or the recognized foreign institution you attended.
      • If the course titles correspond to specific course descriptions found in the catalog of the U.S. institution issuing the transcript, then there is no need to report that you attended a foreign institution. Simply report that you attended the U.S. institution in the Academic History and Transfer Self-Reported Academic Record sections.
      • If the course titles correspond to course descriptions found in the catalog of the foreign institution you attended, please list both the U.S. and foreign institution in the Academic History. Also list both schools when you report your courses, units and grades in the Transfer Self-Reported Academic Record section. This step is automatic with the online application.
      • If neither catalog gives us enough information about your courses, you should be prepared to submit course syllabi at our request.
    • Each course must have a unit value and a final grade or notation.
    • If each course does not have a specific title, units and a grade or notation, then please read the instructions below.
  4. If your credit will be listed as "block" units, undefined "study abroad" units or "independent study," please follow these guidelines:
    • You should still report your coursework exactly as it would appear on your official transcript. For example, if your transcript states, “United Kingdom, 15 units,” please report that.
    • Depending on how much information your transcript provides, we may or may not contact you for more information. You should be prepared to submit the following information at our request:
      • Contact information for an appropriate administrator in your study abroad program or university, who can provide information about your coursework.
      • Course syllabi.
      • A photocopy of your transcript.
