Davis Community

Davis Farmers' Market vendor

Davis—one of California's last true college towns. Students are not just another part of the population here—they're neighbors, shoppers, voters and decision-makers. See why Davis' central location and student-friendly atmosphere make the town such a great partner to a great university.

Davis is…Active

Both on- and off-campus groups sponsor activities for every lifestyle. Help put on a show with a theater troupe; get your blood moving at a local club's Salsa Night; stop by the twice-weekly farmer's market to sample fresh, locally grown foods; check out a show at a local art gallery; or spend an evening socializing at one of Davis' many coffeehouses or clubs. Or check out some of the hundreds of student clubs and organizations active on campus!

Davis is…Central

Just a 15 minute drive away, you'll find all the amenities and opportunities that California's capital has to offer. Sacramento is a thriving city with countless activities going on every day. If you're just going for the evening, catch dinner and a movie at the Tower Café and Theatre; or if politics is your thing, apply for an internship with a governmental or public interest agency. Join fellow art lovers for an informal tour of new exhibitions opening at galleries around town, or catch the premiere of a play at one of Sacramento's many community theatres. Farther afield, beautiful Lake Tahoe is about 150 miles to the east, and the San Francisco Bay Area is less than 75 miles away.

Davis is…Progressive

Long recognized as a pioneer in urban planning, Davis prides itself on maintaining a unique neighborhood character. The entire city is designed to be accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists, and growth limitations have preserved much of the surrounding area as open space. Extensive recycling and waste reduction programs demonstrate Davis' commitment to conserving our environment.

Davis is…Student Oriented

With nearly half the population made up of students, the city of Davis caters to students in ways few other cities can claim. From the heavy concentration of coffeehouses within a few blocks of campus to the "big kids' park" adjacent to the Cuarto residence hall area, students' wants and needs are accommodated in every corner of town. Supermarkets, grocery stores, and a diverse downtown shopping area are all conveniently close to campus. The community is compact enough that it's quick and easy to commute by bike or bus. You won't have to confront traffic, crowds or the other hassles of big-city life.

While You're Here…

Planning a visit to campus? Schedule a few hours to take advantage of all the entertainment and recreational opportunities our campus and community have to offer!

Take a picnic lunch to the Quad (or pick up a meal at the Memorial Union) and enjoy the activities, music and social atmosphere. Check out a mix of student, faculty and local artists' work at one of our on-campus galleries; or take a look at the innovative exhibits in the Design Museum, located in Walker Hall.

Stretch your legs by taking a walk around our active downtown. Within just a few blocks of campus, you'll find restaurants, coffeehouses, specialty shops, art galleries and theaters. Scale new heights at the Rocknasium, Davis' world-class climbing gym; show off your moves at Community Park's skateboard center; or stop by our twice-weekly Farmer's Market for fresh local food and free live entertainment. And when you're all tired out from playing, catch a ride on Unitrans for a bus tour of the city.

A short drive takes you to Sacramento's historic downtown district, premier shopping areas and entertainment venues. Catch a ball game (the River Cats, Kings and Monarchs all call this area home) or a concert (anything from cutting-edge bands at the Crest to top-name performers at Arco Arena). Our area's many arts and entertainment groups keep our community calendars full. Check out the Davis Wiki, Davis Enterprise, Sacramento Bee, Sacramento News & Review, or California Aggie (our daily campus newspaper) for the most current information about local happenings.
