  • Description: The CBST hosts a summer internship program for undergraduate students. For a period of 8-12 weeks, students get involved in ongoing research projects in bioimaging, molecular and cellular biophotonics and medical biophotonics.
  • Eligibility: This program is only open to US citizens and permanent residents attending a 2-or 4-year US institution of higher education. Candidates must be studying one of the following majors or related fields: chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, biomedical engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology.
  • Cost: Participants are responsible for housing costs and receive a $500/week stipend to offset living expenses.

COSMOS: California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science

  • Description: Students participating in COSMOS work side-by-side with outstanding university researchers and faculty to explore advanced topics in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) using curriculum that is hands-on and lab intensive. COSMOS alumni have exclusive opportunities for internships, college scholarships, mini research grants and special events.
  • Eligibility: Academically talented and motivated students who are interested in math, science and engineering and are completing grades 8-12.
  • Cost: Tuition for California residents is $2,425 and $6,500 for non-residents, plus a $30 non-refundable application fee. Tuition covers the cost of room and board, classroom materials, academic field trips and transportation while on campus. Financial aid is available for California residents demonstrating financial need; no qualified student will be denied admission for lack of financial resources.

Outdoor Adventures Summer Youth Whitewater Rafting

  • Description: Spend four days rafting the South Fork of the American River! Outdoor Adventures offers hands-on instruction in whitewater rafting to focus teens' attention on teamwork, personal abilities and problem-solving strategies. Experienced guides will navigate the class II-III river, while participants will be introduced to the natural and human history of the area, as well as learn basics in boat rigging, reading water, river safety, guiding techniques and cooperative camping. Space is limited to twelve participants per session.

  • Eligibility: Must be 18 years or older, in good disciplinary standing and have completed 15 accredited college units. Applicants be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher and must be a University of California student OR have permission of the instructor to enroll.
  • Cost: $1,200 program fee plus transportation costs, Accommodations and Activities Fee (AAF) and Course Fee (CF). Program fee includes a $300 deposit, due at the time of enrollment; fee balance is due by June 12, 2009.

    AAF and CF vary by program. Course Fees are estimated at $174/unit for UC students and $244/unit for others; CF is subject to regent, legislative and gubernatorial action and may change without notice. Students eligible for a California Veterans Fee Waiver can have the Course Fee waived. Financial aid is available.

  • Description: The Young Scholars Program exposes and engages 40 high achieving high school sophomores and juniors in a variety of research experiences within the fields of the biological, agricultural and environmental sciences for university credit.
  • Eligibility: High-achieving high school sophomores and juniors with a strong academic background in science, math and language arts.
  • Cost: Approximately $4,800 for room, meals and all activities. Need-based financial aid is available to a limited number of qualified students.

BAM! Body and Mind Training for the Living Well

Bowling Camp

  • Description: Participants will learn bowling basics with individualized instruction emphasized, including footwork, swing, grip and finishing position as well as etiquette and scoring. Half-and full-day options are available, with full-day participants taking part in afternoon activities such as swimming, crafts and games.

Craft Camp: Ceramics

  • Description: Students will create bowls, whimsical creatures and other functional or artistic items in this tactile class. A variety of clay working techniques will be introduced, including hand building, molding, sculpture and limited wheel throwing.

Craft Camp: Drawing and Painting

  • Description: Students will learn several fine art processes while exploring different drawing and painting techniques using pencils, markers, inks and paints to create works of art incorporating animals, landscapes, still life and fantasy.

Craft Camp: Jewelry and Accessories

  • Description: Students will learn how to create a variety of adornments of their own design, including bracelets, earrings, necklaces, potpourri bags, silk scarves and more. A variety of techniques will be taught, including beading, silk painting, wire jewelry and working with polymer clay.

Craft Camp: Sculpture

  • Description: Students will create everything from wacky creatures to three-dimensional functional objects in this fun filled class. A variety of sculpting processes will be explored, including papier mâché, plaster and wire sculpture. Projects may include figurines, sand sculptures, garden art, picture frames, or other three-dimensional creations.

Craft Camp: Sewing

  • Description: Younger students will complete several smaller projects chosen by the instructor, including tote bags, pillows and other useful items, while older student will use a pattern chosen by the instructor to complete a simple pair of shorts or a skirt. Older students will receive information about fabric choices after registration, so they can purchase fabric prior to the first class.

Craft Camp: Woodworking

  • Description: Students will gain valuable life-long technical skills as they build useful wooden projects. Using hand tools and limited power tools, students will learn techniques such as measuring, cutting, joining, drilling, sanding and finishing. Each year we choose practical projects such as checkerboards, storage boxes, clocks, lamps, or tables.

Dance Fusion Intensive: So You Think You Can Dance?

  • Description: Inspired by the popular dance show “So You Think You Can Dance”, we will challenge participants with new styles of dance and lots of fun fusions of our own. Sessions will focus on techniques in areas such as hip hop, ballet, jazz, contemporary and rhythm stomp with guest instructors in salsa, belly dance and swing.

Dance Intensive: Hip Hop and Video Pop

  • Description: Moves inspired by jazz, afro-latin, and street dancing makes up hip hop as we know it today. This intensive will kick participant's dance moves into high gear with inspirations from classic and new music videos. Horseback Riding Camp

  • Description: Horsemanship instruction offered at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels help children develop riding skills while teaching fundamentals of horse care and stable management. Lessons cover basic safety, grooming and tacking a horse for either western or English riding styles. All riders who want to attend the advanced camp, but have not taken two or more intermediate camps, must schedule a riding evaluation.

Kids, Farms and Food

Two one-week sessions: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

  • Description: Participants will go on field trips to local farms to see, pick and taste produce, talk to farmers and learn the importance (and deliciousness) of eating locally grown food. Part of the week will be spent with a chef-instructor in the Robert Mondavi Institute (RMI) teaching kitchen, where participants will learn basic cooking techniques and will prepare kid-friendly items such as pizzas, salads, sandwiches, ice cream and pies. A portion of each day will be spent in the RMI Good Life Garden, playing games, working in the garden and participating in art projects related to good health and good living. Lunch, featuring food from local farms, will be provided each day, so please note any special dietary needs in the registration paperwork.

Lacrosse Clinic for Boys

  • Description: This two-day clinic is highly beneficial to strengthening young athletes’ teamwork, acceleration, quick turns and hand-eye coordination skills as well as offensive and defensive skills. The clinic will be held at Russell Field.

  • Description: The Women's Lacrosse Sport Club will teach new skills or strengthen players' game in this one day clinic. Focus will be on both individual and group play, including techniques for offense and defense, stick and ball handling as well as plays and strategies. The clinic will be held at Russell Field.

Movement Camp

  • Description: Dancers and movers of all levels and disciplines are taught to move in styles such as ballet, Latin dance, modern, theatrical movement and yoga — no previous experience is necessary. Campers will also work on dance-inspired crafts to make their own costumes. On Friday, we will present a special performance for family and friends. Sessions will be separated by age and grade level.

Outdoor Adventures: Adventure Camp

  • Description: Skilled and experienced staff will facilitate each adrenaline filled camp while emphasizing the importance of cooperation and community. Each day will be a new and challenging adventure. Inflatable Kayaking on the Lower American River, rock climbing, hiking to the crystal clear pools of University Falls and a two-day, one-night whitewater rafting trip are all part of the fun. Transportation and some food on the overnight are included. Space is limited to a small number of participants per session and sessions are separated into two grade ranges.

Rectopia Recreational Activities for Youth

  • Description: Indoor interactive camp offering a wide variety of activities such as games, sports and arts. Each session will have a different theme.

  • Description: Both group and individual swim lessons are offered, including an option to evening one-on-one lessons and "schedule your own" private lessons. A variety of skill levels are accommodated, from parent/child infant lessons to advanced and junior lifeguard levels.

Junior Lifeguarding

Three two-week sessions: Monday-Friday, 10:35 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

  • Description: Qualified students will gain an introduction to the basic skills of lifeguarding including CPR certification, first aid, rescue techniques, recognizing and responding to emergency situations. A skill test will be given on the first day. Participants will be prepared for American Red Cross Lifeguard Training by the end of the session. The last day of each session is a full-day trip to Raging Waters in Sacramento.
